2012 Triple Crown Betting
It has been three decades and counting since we have seen a Triple Crown winner, Affirmed the last horse to accomplish the feat in 1978.
All of us who are betting on a 2011 Triple Crown winner are as excited as ever that we will have our money on history once again.
Since then eleven horses have won the first two legs, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, but all came up short in the Belmont Stakes.
The odds certainly seem to be stacked against a three-year-old sweeping the three races making up the Triple Crown, which are contested over a five-week span.
If we do see a Triple Crown winner this year, it will be accomplished by one of only a few 3-year olds, and the names are as of now still a big secret.
2011 Triple Crown Contenders
Although the participants and contenders for the 2011 Triple Crown are still under wraps, check back soon, as we will have details as soon as they’re available!
Here’s a look at last year’s contenders to take the Triple Crown, as bettors were seeing it a few weeks prior to the Kentucky Derby.
1) Lookin At Lucky: Trained by Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, the colt won five of six starts as a two-year-old, the lone blemish a head loss in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. The colt would not make his three-year-old debut until the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park on March 13, 2010 meaning he had some catching up to do. The Rebel would be his first start on conventional dirt while all six of his career starts had come over synthetic surfaces.
***Lookin at Lucky eventually placed 6 in the Kentucky Derby.
2) Eskendereya: The colt was dazzling winning the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park in February of 2010, stamping him as perhaps the most talented three-year-old in the barn of four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Todd Pletcher. Among his stable-mates were Rule, Super Saver, Discreetly Mine, and Aikenite. Pletcher seemed loaded for the 2010 Triple Crown, but had a zero-for-24 record in the Kentucky Derby.
***Although Eskenderaya would not race in the any of the Triple Crown races due to an injury Super Saver went on to win the Kentucky Derby to break that losing streak.
3) Rule: The colt locked up a Derby starting berth by winning the rich Delta Jackpot at Delta Downs to cap off his two-year-old campaign. He showed that victory was not a fluke by also winning the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in February of 2010.
***Sadly, Rule was ‘ruled out’ of the Kentucky Derby due to an injury…
